Maldives Gets A Luxury Resort

The low-lying Maldives may be slowly drowning because of global warming, but that hasn’t stopped Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts from opening what it calls the “first international luxury resort” on the southern part of the Indian Ocean archipelago.

The Villingili Resort and Spa, which opened in late July, is comprised of 142 standalone villas, including Water Villas perched on stilts above the tortoise-blue lagoon, and Tree House Villas elevated ten feet above ground. There are also outdoor showers and wooden decks with private infinity pools.

To celebrate the opening, Shangri-La is offering two introductory packages through Oct. 31. Guests who stay three nights get a fourth night free; guests can also stay seven nights for the price of five. The package, which starts at $860 a night, also includes the 70-minute flight from Malé, the capital of the Maldives and the entry point for most international visitors, to the airport at Gan, and then the eight-minute boat rode to the resort.
